Other | Nº 18 in D' Atri papers dated 1914-16 - titled Diego Rivera, peintre mexicain, size 100 x 80 - Provenance in Galerie Percier 1933 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Restellini in his text at L'Ange au visage grave, Paris, 2002, p.176: " In 1914, Modigliani used to stay at Rivera's home, in the 16 Rue du Saint-Gothard. he executed this portrait there..." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- MASP files have a letter by Diego Rivera itself saying the next lines: Mexico, 2nd September 1953 Mr. P. M. Bardi Art Museum Sao Paolo, Brazil. The photo you sent me is the original oil painting by Modigliani, my portrait for which I posed in my studio where he worked frequently at 26 rue du depart, in Montparnasse next to the railway station. It was painted in the year of 1916. Sincerely Diego Rivera ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- in the same file the secretary of Rivera informs that there are 3 other portraits of Diego by Modigliani 1.- J. Nethen Coll, Paris (spelling mistake is Netter Coll.) 2.- Galerie Pierre, Paris (probably Percier?) 3.- Van de Klip collection, Brussels WHO Shall we believe the Sitter or the Art Historian??? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ( Parisot in his CR makes a mix with the provenance of both paintings) Photos of Diego Rivera from 1916 and 1919: |

Image of the painting framed at MASP: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sketch for this painting actually at Chicago Art Institute: Diego Rivera, 1915 Pen and brown and black ink, over graphite on tan wove paper, laid down on buff wove card - 266 x 207 mm Signed recto, along bottom, in pen and brown ink: "Modigliani"; inscribed along top left, in pen and brown ink: "Diego Rivera" Restricted gift of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley M. Dixon, Jr., 1967.35. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drawing by Marevna dated in 1916 of Diego, Modigliani and Ehrenburg at the studio of Diego Rivera in 26 rue du depart, in Montparnasse Coll. Moody The Sketch, the opinion of Rivera in the letter at MASP dating his portrait in 1916 and the drawing by Marevna all dated in 1915-16 should make reconsider the dating of the portraits by Diego and moving them to 1915- 1916 changing all the actual configuration we have in Modigliani's oeuvre. |
