Legal note on MR: This investigation has not had access to MR’s catalogue raisonné; all research here is based on open sources, publications and exhibitions. By no means has that catalogue been copied at any point. Modigliani Project and Modigliani Initiative are marked YES when the work is published or otherwise recorded by those projects, even if no catalogue number is assigned; otherwise the field is marked ?.

Provenance

  1. Stephen C. Clark Collection, New York (by 1929).
  2. Private collection, Paris (by 1956?), recorded with a query in one of the two Pfannstiel entries.
  3. Knoedler & Co., New York (1957).
  4. Josephine Ford Collection (1957).
  5. Detroit Institute of Arts, inv. 2005.61 (gift of the Josephine F. Ford Estate, 2005).

Pfannstiel lists the composition twice. No. 116: private French collection — this investigation notes that this is incompatible with Clark ownership already in 1929; D’Atri no. 1750 places that card in the Clark Collection in 1929, no size, no date. No. 232: Guillaume Collection then Bernheim-Jeune (1929); D’Atri no. 310, 55 × 37 cm, dated 1917, Guillaume Collection 1929.

Selected bibliography

Book-length publications are marked with a footnote giving a full citation. Exhibition catalogues appear in both this list and the exhibition list when this investigation recorded them in both places. Where this investigation listed a long run of secondary mentions, only the principal catalogues and museum or sale references are retained here.
