This investigation records a drawn ear painted over the colour.
The painting is published as incorporating a newspaper collage. This investigation records that the newsprint is reversed (readable only in a mirror) and publishes a comparison with the plate in Gotthard Jedlicka, Modigliani, Zurich, E. Rentsch, 1953, p. 29. In that 1953 plate the column title reads “ER DES THEATRES”; the present surface reads “GIC.” This investigation notes the coincidence with the early title “Au théâtre” Beatrice. Those are published visual observations; no conclusion is drawn here.
