PAST EXPERTS

Quite a curious crowd.

All connoisseur style experts, we can find many kinds, from the poet or artist to the ex lover, daughter, wealthy fans and even maids. You can choose from a large list, and the experts are of varied prestige...

Only a few of them had a try at a catalogue raisonné, many just tried to earn a living from the tragic myth.

At present the only one still valid is Ceroni, who even with so many mistakes and gaps stands as the most accurate one.
If you have a work with his stamp on it then you will hit the floor of the 2 major auction houses (Sotheby's/Christie's) if none don't even dream about it (try at Bonham's)...

In the case of Modigliani, there are no fewer than five catalogues out there – one by Joseph Lanthemann, which “includes numerous questionable works”, according to Sotheby’s specialist, John Tancock. Compiling these catalogues confers huge powers. As well as selling the certificates, some authors have been rumored to say, "You want your artwork in the catalogue? Then sell it to me. And if you don’t play ball, well, your work won’t be included, and will drop drastically in value".
