OLD TIMES AT WILDENSTEIN'S

  • His methods are:

1.- Accept your letter or email.
2.- If they see something to be noted, they send you the payment proforma.
3.- After paying they give you a date to take the painting to the Institute in Paris.
4.- Leave the work there for the time he will need (1 week as they usually say).
    5.- Return the painting.
6.- You will never see him or even talk with him.
7.- Wait until they answer you.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extract from: The experts Battle by Marc Spiegler:

Restellini says he has taken steps to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest: He has no personal contact with owners, who must send their works to the Wildenstein Institute. Rather than relying on other people’s judgments, he has vowed to see every work himself. If the purported provenance arouses doubts, he requires laboratory tests: infrared analysis
of the paint layers to identify over painting, for example, or testing for elements such as titanium.

Following the usual practice when dealing with owners of works submitted for a catalogue raisonné, he sends
the owners an exhaustive disclaimer stating that he “need not state the reasons on which [his decision] is
based and in no event may [his decision] give rise to any claim whatsoever.”

All these steps, however, have not insulated Restellini from lawsuits over rejected works... LINK >>

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, if your work seems to have possibilities you will have to pay first (1,114 € and your insurance bill, if you get one of course) and then after sending the work to Paris at your "own risk" you will only get this answer:

1.- Will be included in the catalogue being prepared.

2.- Will not be included in catalogue.

3.- Will remain under further investigation.

    So it's up to you...

Have he done the same with the Barnes foundation works? have they brought them to Paris? Are they going to be included?, Better yet has he done the same with the works not previously catalogued by Ceroni in so many national OR PRIVATE museums?
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just a brief look at his publication titled "Silence eternel" that he names as the catalogue raisonne for the brief production of Modigliani's lover Jeanne Hébuterne shows clearly that he is the classical art historian/connoisseur.
In the purported catalogue he does not give provenance, history files or what ever could be necessary to proove without doubts the authenticity, his word and publication give them the golden varnish...

In Spain we have sentence that says:

"If you want to know something about someone, look who he goes with"
