ARTHUR PFANNSTIEL

>To see the works listed year by year, go to the CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ page.

    • German born, he wanted to become a painter and finally became a German translator in Paris.
H e married a French woman and during second world war he was a Nazi art looter living in the occupied France.
(Close collaborator for E. Goepel the main source for Goering and Hitler)
This is an exact copy of the confidential looted art report on this subject

As member of the ERR he was very active in the confiscation of Jewish collections.
      Complete report here
Is curious to see you can hate Jews and collect their work...
He was condemned for espionage, looting and sentenced ti prison, finally went out and started again in the art business:

Various publications, I will focus in just 2 to make this easier:

1.- . Modigliani, L'art et la vie XI , Ed. Seheur 1929 (know for the catalogue présumé in the last pages).
Included 290 works with only 90 photos, an enormous gap for mistakes.
Published with the support of Zborowski and J. Netter the famous collector.
Therefore using the files & approval by both of them.

2.- Modigliani et son oeuvre, Étude critique et catalogue raisonné, Ed. Bibliothèque des arts, 1956.
Included 362 works with only 43 photos, an even bigger gap for mistakes.

Modigliani : a study of his sculpture / Bernard Schuster; Arthur S Pfannstiel
Ed Jacksonville, FL., USA : NAMEGA Corp. 1987.

Full of mistakes, the same as the others (probably they limited themselves to copying each other, so one mistake leads to another and so on and on...)
I gave it time because the new experts use him as a base to present many new works and I think it's interesting to let the reader reach his own opinion...
In his time it was a good work to note, nowadays it would not survive a minimum analysis.
His opinion today is perfect to fill the notes & records for the auction houses, but only when it also has the Ceroni name in the list...
If a Modigliani painting only bears the opinion of Pfannstiel, it will not hit the floor in the main auction houses.
Please have in mind, I reproduce it as it is, dates, size and location are not right, but that's what he told.
Frédéric Pfannstiel his son, collaborates with Parisot (archives legales) as part of committees. His files are actually in the hands of someone from Florida I think...

Actually his opinion is perfect to fill the notes & records for the auction houses.
But only when it also have the Ceroni name in the list...

If a Modigliani painting only bears the opinion by Pfannstiel, it will never hit the floor of the main auction houses
In a little time I will give more information from his work but until then, you can check his books...
Definitively not a reliable or trustworthy source for cataloging.

Would you still call it raisonné?
